ILLUSION, ABBERATION, IMAGINATION (RT: 39 minutes)
If there is one constant in filmmaking, it’s all about the story,
whether fabricated, inspired by experiences both real or imagined,
or manipulated. The result is a visit, however brief, into a world
(or worlds) we never knew existed.
E=MC2
(Hong Kong, 2001) Dir./Scr.: Alina Chau Hin Fan
E=MC2 tells a mythological version of the creation of the universe
as told by young Albert Einstein to his little Maja. It is about how
power tears the friendship of a seemingly inseparable pair, leading
to a tragic battle and ending with the inevitable Big Bang.

BOWDA’S
WORK
(Japan, 2002) Dir./Scr.: Bowda Katsushi
BOWDA’S WORK is inspired by the director’s fascination
with puppet animation. Reminiscent of the director’s previous
work, the working environment is a stage during which much action
takes place.

BLUE
RAIN
(USA/Taiwan, 2003) Dir./Scr.: Hsin-Ping Pan
A girl sitting in the top of the city is crying. Her sadness bursts
out from her eyes endlessly and floods the whole city. One little
resident can’t stand the leaking problem in his room anymore.
Grabbing his bag and umbrella, the little guy decides to step out
and go on a journey. A magical and bizarre adventure therefore begins.

KAIDAN
(Japan, 2002) Dir./Scr.: Iki Norihito
Iki’s “animation without continuity” derives from
photographs he took near his rented room, and from the folktale of
a girl in love with a ghostly frog.

SHE
WRITES A POEM
(Hong Kong, 2002) Dir./Scr.: John Ho
A gift is offered to a theoretically blissful girl. When she feels
sad and loses attention, he gives her footage of animation. And she
gives him a prose poem in return, and her works are collected into
a book, “She writes a poem.” The pair is romantic but
does not mean the same to their relationship. The girl continues to
write, and he continues to draw.

DREAM
OF A CACTUS, A
(USA, 2003) Dir./Scr.: Robert Chang Chin Lin
This colorful computer-generated short animation raises a moot question
of the state of the reality: What is real and unreal, visible and
invisible, material and mind? Then, and only then, can one walk into
the inner mind of a cactus.
