WHALES AND ORGIES

WHALES AND ORGIES is an intimate portrayal of Dave Choe, a Los Angeles graffiti artist. The documentary exposes the artist’s talent, philosophies, and excitement for graffiti art. Viewed as “destructive” and a “nuisance” by mainstream society, graffiti art and its significance are demonstrated and explained through Dave Choe’s perspective from the underground.

ART AND ACTIVISM ON THE ONES AND TWOS

ART AND ACTIVISM ON THE ONE AND TWOS profiles two Asian American female DJs in New York City. DJ Kuttin Kandi, a Filipino American who in 1998 was the first woman ever to qualify for the DMC National Championships, has raised awareness on the contributions of both Asians and women in hip hop music. DJ Rekha, founder of Basement Bhangra and Bollywood Disco, introduced bhangra music into the New York City club scene. Well-regarded as an activist and leader in the South Asian music scene, Rekha has received considerable recognition from both mainstream and alternative press. In this lively documentary, Kuttin Kandi and Rekha both discuss their upbringing, how they became DJs, and their beliefs about activisim and community.

NO NEED FOR COSPLAY brings viewers into the world of Cosplay, or costume play, in which Anime (Japanse animation) and video game fans dress up as their favorite characters. Set at the Ani-Magic convention in Lancaster, CA, this remote location becomes a meeting ground for costumers and anime fans from all over the country.

STERILIZED CHERRY

STERILIZED CHERRY uses new and old images of Lolita set against pin-up photos and school girl video clips of the artist as well as icons of orientalism and youthful female consumption. Juxtaposing these images with candy-coated “la-las”, director Choi critiques both stereotypical images of Asian women as consumable objects of desire; and an Asian cultural context in which young Asian girls prostitute themselves for material gain.
