12:00 P.M. CUTTERS: VOICES FROM THE EDITING ROOM

It’s a little-appreciated but inescapable fact: the film and sound editor plays a critical role in shaping the motion pictures that roll out into the multiplexes and onto the big screen. Often the final stage before a feature film is completed, editors enhance (and sometimes save) the movie through careful and considered organization of raw footage and sound effects into a coherent, compelling storyline. Join VC Board Member/DGA Member/film and television editor Walt Louie as he swaps war stories with guest editors Tim Chau (Sound designer, The Joy Luck Club, Mr. Holland’s Opus, Shanghai Nights), Richard Chew (Star Wars, Risky Business), Bill Hoy (Dances With Wolves, We Were Soldiers) and Maysie Hoy (The Joy Luck Club, Smoke). Find out how they got their start, and what they’ve got lined up next.

2:00 P.M. AFTERNOON WITH A FILMMAKER: Jessica Yu

Long a well-regarded documentary filmmaker, Jessica Yu has gone places since winning the 1997 Academy Award for her documentary short for Breathing Lessons. Besides continuing her filmmaking activities in non-fiction filmmaking (her latest feature, In the Realm of the Unreal, about artist Henry Darger, is set for completion shortly), Jessica has recently broken new ground as a director for such high-profile television series as The West Wing. In a conversation with Walt Louie featuring select clips from her recent work and ongoing projects, Jessica will talk about her endeavors and the challenges of working in multiple (and not always complementary) filmmaking environments.

4:30 P.M. FILMMAKERS CONGRESS
This one’s for the filmmakers. The VC Filmmakers’ Union presents this special meeting between Asian Pacific American filmmakers past, present, and future and representatives of the Asian American Media Coalition. It will be a rare opportunity for the artists and advocates of diversity in media to meet and strategize on issues pertinent to equitable representation of Asian Americans onscreen.

DGA ATRIUM • SUNDAY, MAY 4th

12:00 P.M. MONEY TALK: INDEPENDENT FILM FINANCING

Independent filmmaking has never been an easy task. With increased uncertainty in global politics and financial markets, there seems to be more labor than love behind every film. Hope still exists. From grants and private equity, to small production companies and film sales companies, there are opportunities to get your film made and distributed. Industry professionals will map out the financial landscape through this in depth panel discussion. Panelists confirmed at presstime include: Mark Litwak, Attorney at Law, Law Offices of Mark Litwak & Associates; and Toni Tabora, Media Fund Director, NAATA.

2:00 P.M. FIGHT CINEMA: The Impact of Martial Arts on Film

Kung-fu theater. Weekend matinees. Television marathons. The martial arts film crashed onto U.S. shores in the early 1970s and landed a round-house kick to American popular culture. Directors who themselves were martial artists revolutionized the kung-fu film with a new realism, stylish cinematography and amazing physical feats. But the artistry and magic would not be possible without the blood, sweat, tears and talent of the actors in front of the camera and the choreographers behind-the-scenes. Fight Cinema brings together actors, stuntmen, directors, producers and martial artists to discuss their personal experiences and motivations for bringing martial arts to the big screen. Panelists confirmed at presstime include: Diana Lee Inosanto, Actor/Stuntwoman/Model; James Lew, Actor/Stuntman/Fight Choreographer; Phillip Rhee, Chariman & CEO, International Entertainment Group; and Robin Shou, Director/Actor.
