“A hilarious spoof buffet with brains to match, KUNG PHOOEY! is
an Asian American exploitation film made the right way, poking fun at
every stereotype and cliche it can find, from David Carradine to CROUCHING
TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON. The story begins as young Art Chew enrolls as
a novice with the three Ancient Masters at the Shur-Li Temple. Twenty
years later—now a deft kung fu monk—Chew arrives in America,
searching for the missing Ancient Peach, which holds the secret to Eternal
Youth. Landing in Chinatown, he teams up with the screwball trio of
Waymon, who has trouble admitting he’s Chinese, Sue Shee, a beautiful
aerobics queen, and the dyslexic Leroy, who thinks he’s "Roy
Lee," the incarnation of Bruce Lee. Together, this motley crew
faces off against the evil Helen Hu and her henchmen in an all-out battle
for the Ancient Peach, all before it is mass-produced into a "fountain
of youth" soft drink. Shot entirely in San Francisco and Oakland,
KUNG PHOOEY! assembles a stellar cast of Asian American actors with
impeccable comic timing and offers a script brimming with wit and shrewd
humor. Forget the Hollywood knock-offs that spoof Asians just to laugh
at them. KUNG PHOOEY! will have you rolling down the aisles and laughing
at all the right jokes.
