Visual Communications is proud to be a community co-presenter of Arthur Dong's film, "Hollywood Chinese," which is set to release theatrically in Los Angeles on May 30. Hot off its month-long extended San Francisco run and international film festival tour, including Toronto and a Best Documentary win at Taipei's Golden Horse Awards, "Hollywood Chinese" will play at the Laemmle's Music Hall in Beverly Hills and Laemmle's One Colorado in Pasadena.
Directed by triple Sundance winner and OscarĀ® nominee Arthur Dong (Forbidden City, U.S.A., Licensed to Kill, Coming Out Under Fire), "Hollywood Chinese" is an ambitious history lesson that mixes both artistic contributions by well-known and unsung heroes and heroines, while attempting to understand the basis and origin of "Asian mystique" and how it has been portrayed in films. Racial stereotyping, Caucasian actors being given roles that should have been parceled out to true Asian thespians, and the cultural divide that has, up until recently, not fully accepted Asian immigrants as part of the American patchwork quilt are imaginatively and effectively drawn.
"Hollywood Chinese" features a virtual who's who of top Chinese and Chinese American film artists, including Ang Lee, Joan Chen, Wayne Wang, Nancy Kwan, James Hong, Lisa Lu, B.D. Wong, Tsai Chin and writers Amy Tan and David Henry Hwang. Also featuring Luise Rainer, Turhan Bey and Christopher Lee. Dong has also resurrected obscure offerings like the 1916 silent film "The Curse of Quon Gwon" which was considered lost forever.
Director Arthur Dong will be present for the 7:40 pm shows on Friday, May 30, at Laemmle's Music Hall and Saturday, May 31, at Laemmle's One Colorado.
